For Faculty & Staff

The Counseling Center provides one-session referral counseling for faculty and staff who may need on-going counseling for personal concerns. We maintain a large referral database of mental health providers in the Austin-San Antonio corridor and surrounding areas. Call 245-2208 to arrange a referral appointment. Referrals may also be provided by phone. Because of concerns about confidentiality, we prefer not to make referrals by e-mail.

Counseling Center staff are also available to consult with faculty and staff regarding mental health concerns they may have about individual students (see “Referral” in this section of the Counseling Center website). Limited consultation is available for individual faculty, staff and department heads who are concerned about potential mental health issues of colleagues and employees.

At-Risk - Helping Struggling Students - New Online Training Available

Today’s students face increasing pressures, sometimes leading to emotional distress, depression, anxiety, and even thoughts of suicide that may also compromise students’ academic achievements affecting their ability to stay in school. As educators, we can play an important role in ensuring these students receive the help and support they need.

To help achieve this goal, the Texas State Counseling Center has teamed up with Mental Health America of Texas and Kognito to offer a new interactive, online course where you can learn best practices in discussing your concerns with students and if necessary, referring them to campus support services.  We would like to encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity and become one of those who obtain a certificate as an “At-Risk” trained faculty or staff member.

In the course you will engage in simulated conversations with student avatars that are fully animated and emotionally responsive, making this interactive environment a highly realistic role-play experience.  Participation takes 45 minutes and can be completed over multiple sittings (the course saves your progress along the way).
