What We Can Offer

How To Use The Counseling Center Services

Your first visit to the Counseling Center will be an initial consultation appointment. Same day appointments will be available daily, mornings and afternoons. Students may call (245-2208) or stop by the Counseling Center, on the 5th floor of the LBJ Student Center on the day they wish to be seen, to make an initial consultation appointment. Students are encouraged to call early for a same day appointment. During your initial consultation, you and a staff counselor will decide how the Counseling Center can best meet your needs. Additional counseling appointments as necessary will be scheduled with a counselor trained to address your issues or you may be referred to a more appropriate resource. At your initial consultation, you will receive a copy of the Counseling Center Student Guide to Services and Policies, which provides detailed information about appointment scheduling, cancellation policies and confidentiality of information. Students who are not able to come for an initial consultation appointment at the times indicated above should stop by or call the Counseling Center at 245-2208.

Specific Services

Individual Counseling

Students meet individually with a counselor to talk about themselves, relationships, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that concern them.

Group Counseling

Students with common concerns meet as a group with a counselor. Groups offered in the past include: Eating Disorders Test Anxiety Self-Esteem Group Assertiveness Training Divorce Support Hispanic Student Support Group Sexual Abuse/Incest Survivors Stress Management Adult Children of Dysfunctional Families

Couples Counseling

While couples counseling often requires a time commitment beyond the scope of the Counseling Center's services, counselors can meet with couples, both of whom must be a student at Texas State and currently enrolled, on a limited basis to provide relationship, marital, or divorce counseling.

Educational Programs and Workshops

The Counseling Center offers many seminars and workshops on mental health, adjustment, and development topics. These are designed to help students learn skills and strategies to deal with stress, school related problems, issues related to living in a diverse and multicultural world, and other personal and mental health problems. Training seminars are also offered to students, faculty and staff groups.

Consultation & Referral

Counseling Center staff provides consultation and referral information to Texas State students who have concerns about others' behaviors, seek material for class assignments, report to the media, or plan programs. Referrals to community resources are made when needed or requested by a student, faculty or staff.

Psychological Assessment

Psychological assessment is available as a part of the counseling process or upon referral from an outside agency.

Psychiatric Services

Limited psychiatric services are available on campus by referral from Counseling Center staff or physicians in the Student Health Center. If a student is unable to schedule an appointment on campus, referrals may also be made to private psychiatrists in the surrounding geographic area who have experience working with college students. For on campus services, there is a $35 initial co-payment with $20 co-payments for each follow-up appointment. Off campus referrals are generally at the student's expense. Students who have exhausted all possible financial resources may request limited assistance from the Counseling Center for off campus psychiatric services.
