The Texas State Counseling Center provides counseling and education to students and consultation and training to staff and faculty of the university community to facilitate the retention, adjustment, and development of Texas State students. The Texas State Counseling Center’s operation hours are 8AM – 5PM, Monday – Friday.

Individual, group, and couple’s counseling services at provided free of charge to current enrolled Texas State students. While all enrolled students are eligible to receive counseling services, in times of heavy demand priority is given to students enrolled at least half-time or more.

Counseling is provided by our staff of licensed counselors and psychologists. Services are also provided by master’s and doctoral practicum counselors and interns under the supervision of professional staff.

Currently enrolled students may utilize our services at no cost.

Due to the significant and continuing increase in demand for counseling service and our limited staff resources, we have had to establish session limits. Students are allowed a total of 7 individual counseling sessions per semester. Session limits for participation in group counseling will be determined by group leaders.

All aspects of your participation in counseling at the Counseling Center are confidential by state law. The Counseling Center operates as a single entity, which means that counselors and psychologists within the Counseling Center may share your information in order to consult with each other, and/or with the campus psychiatrists who are under contract with the Counseling Center, in order to provide you the most effective services. No information may be released to anyone without your written permission; however, your counselor is required to report disclosed information to the appropriate authorities when:

• Serious and foreseeable harm to you or others is evident

• Release of confidential information is required by court order or requested by you

• Child abuse or neglect is evident or suspected

• Abuse, neglect or exploitation of adults who are vulnerable due to physical or mental impairment or advanced age is evident or suspected

In an emergency situation and during operating hours, call the Counseling Center (245-2208) and ask to speak to a counselor immediately. Suicidal intent, acute risk of violent behavior, severe loss of emotional control, and gross impairment in thinking ability are examples of emergencies.

If an emergency occurs after 5 p.m. or on weekends, please contact the University Police Department by dialing 911 from any campus phone. If you are not on campus during the time of an emergency, please dial 911. You may also use the Avail 24-hour Crisis Hotline by calling 1-877-466-0660 (Toll Free). Indicate if you are a Texas State student when calling.

A student who has counseling needs that are beyond the Counseling Center’s Scope of Practice is eligible for support and referral services.

The Counseling Center offers a number of counseling groups each semester. Before the group begins, you will meet individually with its leader(s). Individual counseling appointments are usually 45-50 minutes in length. Group counseling sessions are usually 90 minutes in length.

If you need to cancel your appointment, please call the Counseling Center at 245-2208 or visit our office in LBJSC 5-4.1 Whenever possible, please provide 24-hour notice of cancellation.

The Counseling Center has critical demand for appointment time and a limited number of staff. Therefore, if you fail to show up for two appointments without providing cancellation notice 24 hours in advance, we will be unable to schedule another appointment or keep any scheduled appointments until the next semester you are enrolled.
