Support Groups

Spring 2008

Each semester the Counseling Center offers a number of therapy groups. The groups are open to currently enrolled Texas State University students. Groups

begin within the first month of the semester and then close to new membership.

The groups meet weekly for ninety minutes. Enrollment is free and a pre-

screening appointment can be made directly through the Counseling Center in

LBJ Student Center 5-4.1 or by calling 512.245.2208. Confidentiality in

individual and group therapy is strictly respected.

Women's Body Image

This group is for women who are impacted by a critical self image.  In a supportive 
environment, the group will focus on identifying contributors to a critical self image 
while creating opportunities to increase self awareness, comfort in your unique body, 
and self acceptance.
Mondays, 12:30-2:00 PM

LGBQ Pride

This group is for students wanting to discuss the impact of their sexual identity on 
crucial aspects of their lives and relationships.  In a supportive and inclusive 
environment members can discuss issues related to coming out, homophobia, and 
heterosexism as you define your personal identity and improve interpersonal 
relationships.

Sexual Assault & Abuse Survivors

This is a group for women who have been victims of sexual assault and abuse.  Groups 
members will be able to share their experiences and feelings in an understanding and 
accepting environment.  Goals for the group will be to help members express feelings, 
reduce guilt and self-blame, develop positive coping strategies, and strengthen 
self-esteem.
Mondays, 5:15-6:30 PM

Facing the Fear:  Anxiety

This group is designed for students who are struggling with various forms of anxiety 
including panic attacks, generalized anxiety, and OCD.  Members will learn about 
common sources of anxiety, how anxiety works in the body, coping skills, prevention 
strategies, and the link between assertiveness and anxiety.

Anger Management:  Your Plan for Real-Life Coping

This group is designed to assist members in learning simple, innovative techniques 
for managing anger and developing healthier ways of relating.

Completing the Degree:  Graduate Students

This group is an opportunity for graduate students to receive feedback and support 
about the emotional, interpersonal, and intellectual demands of being a graduate 
student.  The goal is to enhance your ability to effectively cope with the various 
stressors in your life as you pursue your academic and career goals.

Adult Children of Alcoholics:  Dealing with Dysfunctional Families

This group is for students who have been impacted by dysfunction in their family
due to drug, alcohol use, or mental health issues.  Members will gain support, 
understanding of how family patterns impact them, and skills for developing 
healthier relationships.

Getting Past the Past:  Grief and Loss

This group is a source of support for students who have experienced the death of a
loved one.  Group members will be able to share their experiences and feelings,
develop an understanding of the grief process, and develop strategies of self-care.
